THE SIMDEX:
AN UNOFFICIAL INDEX FOR
RUDOLF SIMEK’S
DICTIONARY OF NORTHERN MYTHOLOGY

Joseph S. Hopkins for Mimisbrunnr.info, May 2019. Last updated November 2020.

Originally published in German as Lexikon der germanischen Mythologie (1984, Alfred Kröner Verlag Stuttgart) and subsequently expanded and translated into English by Angela Hall and published as Dictionary of Northern Mythology (1993, Boydell and Brewer), Austrian scholar Rudolf Simek’s handbook remains an indispensable tool for the study of the ancient Germanic peoples. A significant amount of the handbook’s entries cover topics otherwise little discussed—if mentioned at all—in English language scholarship. Hall’s English translation in particular is widely used by researchers.

However, its inexplicable absence of an index acts as a hurdle for readers who would hope to unlock its full potential. The handbook sometimes points to entries that do not exist; contains entries about unpredictable topics, scholars, and objects; and sometimes uses anglicized or marked forms, a result of direct translation from German to English. These issues can make navigation difficult and entries easy to miss.

To aid researchers in using the handbook, Mimisbrunnr.info has produced the Simdex. The Simdex employs the following edition as its basis:

  • Simek, Rudolf. 2007 [1993]. Dictionary of Northern Mythology. Boydell & Brewer. ISBN 0-85991-513-1

In compiling the Simdex, Mimisbrunnr.info has generally maintained Dictionary of Northern Mythology’s formatting. One exception is the handbook’s use of italics: Simek’s dictionary inconsistently employs italics in entry titles, a formatting decision that we have not carried over to the present index. Other inconsistencies in entry titles—such as capitalization—remain.

In addition to the issues discussed above, readers—especially new readers—should be wary of the handbook’s other problems. For example, Simek appears to have composed the bulk of the handbook’s entries somewhere in the early 1980s. While the field of ancient Germanic studies has come a long way since that time, Simek does not appear to have updated his handbook to reflect changes, innovations, and discoveries in the field. He frequently presents his personal opinion as fact, and entries sometimes contradict one another, almost as if they were written by different authors. For an instance of the latter, see Simek’s discussion of the goddess Hlín in Simek 2007 [1993]: 153 & 274. Eagle-eyed readers can also spot clear mistakes here and there that updates and revisions could have resolved. For example, in the author’s entry on Vanaheimr, Simek says that Icelandic poet Snorri “unquestionably invented the name” (Simek 2007 [1993]: 350), yet the term also appears in a stanza of the eddic poem Vafþrúðnismál, a fact that Simek neglects to address.

Readers can insulate themselves from these issues by using Simek’s handbook alongside comparable and more recent (yet far less extensive) handbooks by other scholars, such as the following:

  • Lindow, John. 2002. Handbook of Norse Mythology. Oxford University Press. Publisher website.

  • Lindahl, Carl; John McNamara; and John Lindow (Editors). 2002. Medieval Folklore: A Guide to Myths, Legends, Tales, Beliefs, and Customs. Oxford University Press. Publisher website.

Please note: Mimisbrunnr.info provides the Simdex for research purposes only. Mimisbrunnr.info does not permit advertisements and does not participate in any commercial ‘affiliate’ programs. Mimisbrunnr.info does not in any way profit from the Simdex or any other resources provided by the project.

USING THE SIMDEX

The Simdex is currently searchable solely by way of your browser’s page search function. However, for specific terms, you may require special characters. Apple users will find that OSX and iOS allow users to hold down a key for special characters, but do not by default present options of particular use for Old Norse studies. To remedy this issue, please find below a list of useful characters:

  • Eth: Ð, ð

  • O-ogonek: Ǫ, ǫ

  • Thorn: Þ, þ

  • Y-acute: Ý, ý
