An Index for Rudolf Simek’s
“Dictionary of Northern Mythology”

Åsgårdsreien (often known in English as ‘the wild Hunt of Odin’) by Peter Nicolai Arbo, 1872. National Museum of Norway.

Joseph S. Hopkins for Mimisbrunnr.info, May 2019

Originally published in German as Lexikon der germanischen Mythologie (1984, Alfred Kröner Verlag Stuttgart) and subsequently expanded and translated into English by Angela Hall as Dictionary of Northern Mythology (1993, Boydell and Brewer), Austrian scholar Rudolf Simek’s handbook remains an indispensable tool for the study of the ancient Germanic peoples. Hall’s translation in particular is widely used by academics, heathens, and artists. A significant amount of these entries cover topics otherwise little discussed—if mentioned at all—in English language scholarship.

Unfortunately, the Dictionary of Northern Mythology lacks an index. This makes for a major problem for readers: The handbook at times points to entries that do not exist; contains entries about unpredictable topics, scholars, and objects; and sometimes uses anglicized or marked forms stemming from direct German to English translation. These issues add up to make for difficult navigation and easy-to-miss entries, a problem minimized by the production of the present index.

The index specifically uses the following edition as its basis:

  • Simek, Rudolf. 2007 [1993]. Dictionary of Northern Mythology. Boydell & Brewer. ISBN 0-85991-513-1

In compiling this index, the author has maintained Dictionary of Northern Mythology’s formatting with few exceptions. One such example is italics: Simek’s dictionary inconsistently employs italics in entry titles, a formatting decision that has not carried over to the present index. Other inconsistencies in entry titles, such as capitalization, remain.

Beyond the index, readers—especially new readers—should be aware that Simek’s handbook has other problems. For example, the author composed its entries somewhere in the early 1980s and appears to have simply left it that. Simek often presents his personal opinion as fact, sometimes rendering entries far out of step with mainstream scholarship (see, for example, any of the handbook’s Týr-related entries). Despite the various editions of the handbook over the past four decades, readers will also now and then encounter outright mistakes (such as in the author’s entry on Vanaheimr).

In turn, one would be wise to use the handbook alongside comparable works of others. For example, Mimisbrunnr.info recommends Simek’s handbook along side that of American scholar John Lindow (Handbook of Norse Mythology, 2002, Oxford University Press).

Search

This index is searchable by way of your browser’s page search function. However, for specific terms, you may require special characters. Apple users will find that OSX and iOS allows users to hold down a key for special characters, but does not by default present options of particular use for Old Norse studies. To remedy this issue, find below a list of useful characters:

  • Eth: Ð, ð

  • O-ogonek: Ǫ, ǫ

  • Thorn: Þ, þ

  • Y-acute: Ý, ý
