Hopkins’s translation of the Nine Plants Spell in Chloé Zhao’s film “Hamnet”

We are pleased to report that Joseph S. Hopkins’s translation of Nigon Wyrta Galdor, rendered by Hopkins as the Nine Plants Spell and commonly known today as the Nine Herbs Charm has been adapted to the big screen in Chloé Zhao’s 2025 film Hamnet. The spell plays a major part in the first half of the film, implying that it continued into oral tradition from the Old English period.
